Garden Snail Tea Pot

Although the spout of my giant blue garden snail, could pour if it wanted to, this guy was designed to be a garden sculpture. He has holes in the base to allow rainwater to escape. I plan to cement him onto the garden wall.

Funky Fungi bowls

These dessert bowls were designed from the fungi seen growing in deep forests.

The sculptural hand-built shape means they're just as useful for decorating as they are for eating out of. "Let me just grab some art to eat out of"

The mat glaze deepens into a deep green glass at the bottom of the bowl. There's actually so many subtle colors coming out through the light.

Another Ginger Jar

There's something about a lidded pot, that a potter loves. They're irresistible to make. This jar was thrown on the wheel and hand trimmed with a slight fluted finish. The oil-spot glaze worked really well to bring out the subtle irregularities that come from hand trimming.
This is my favorite glaze.

Bowls and a jug

There's still a fascination with functional beauty.
A jug with plenty of hidden volume and a lip that pours without dribbles and an elegant handle or functional. But it also feels good to hold and looks beautiful.
The bowls are perfect as servers or salad bowls; light and unique. It just feels good to have beautiful, hand-made things in use.

These Sea Trumpet flowers have a wonderful squirming maze of stems inside, binding them all together.
The trumpet mouths are rimmed in a dry, brittle edge that contrasts with their smooth deep funnels.

Barrel sponges 2010

I saw these sponges while diving around the gulf of Chumporn and Similan Islands. They can grow big enough to hold a man inside. But these ones are also quite close to real sizes.
The pink cup at their centers is shallow. Most of the sponge is hollow. They make great tactile, sculptural show pieces.
The glaze on the outside is a dull mat green. The inside is fleshy pink.

Ocean Heart

Ocean Heart was created at KIS using our own glazes. It is going to be auctioned on March 31st for charity.
The design is based around the veins and aorta that feed a heart and move us forward through our lives. The blue dripping effect is the oceans life blood - not draining away, just flowing, as blood should. Being blue blood (oxygenated?) makes it more aquatic and more pleasing than red blood. The flow affect is liquid delight. Is it dripping down or flowing up? Is the cup half full or half empty?
The sculpture is decorative. To add anything in would be too busy.

Sexy dessert

Look at these colors, so much depth and luminescence in the dark glazes!

Each bowl has a golden lip. The raised, stylized design is unique to each bowl and represents the movement of swirling black water. The bowls are hand pinched and formed so that the sense of touch can share a delight with taste and sight as desserts are eaten.

Slug does Yoga

Downward Dog Pose is one of my favorites. It's what this spiky slug appears to be doing. His rippling flanges are practically moving like the flamenco skirt they resemble.

Bubble warts are another practical sculpture. Sit it one way and it's a sea slug sculture. Turned over and it is a serving dish. Seafood pasta?
I'm still not bored with finding new, interesting ways to disguise the unglazed foot. And the bubbles are beautifully accentuated by the burnt orange rings.

Manta Mantra

ON a dive trip to Similan Islands with friends, our primary objective was to encounter some Manta rays. We chanted. Our mantra;MANTA. It worked. We got to experience some wonderful, up-close moments some of these graceful, beautiful, playful giants. It was a magic moment.
Manta Mantra is, once again, a sculpture to be appreciated from all angles. He can lie down, giving the image of flying/swimming. The unglazed foot reveals the cavity and feeding mandibles. Or he can stand up on the mandibles, in the posture of a dive.
The manta has some deep, highlighted cracks in his body. The cracks add a thoughtful dimension to the sculpture, hinting at the cracks in the fragile environment he swims in. But these cracks also add beauty and are highlighted with the liquid blue glaze that I love to use.

Georgia O'Keef's Slug
I was inspired by the suggestive subject of Georgia O'Keef's paintings. I wanted to do a similar thing with my ceramics. Instead of her floral subject, I've also adapted this theme to suit my familiar topic of marine life. I think I was successful in my adaptation of O'Keef's imagery. The pink folding lips are not subtle. I also continue to enjoy the appreciation of the negative space in the vessel.
Her slug, here, is a sculpture that can be appreciated from all angles. She has no bottom. It's fun to turn her around and up-side-down, to get changing perspectives of her curves.

Drift wood Mobile

Whale Dreaming

This sculpture, made at the same time as the following two sculptures was so much fun to make. They all were, really. But I loved making something so big. The studio in Phuket where I was able to work manufactures ceramics for hotels. They have huge gas fired kilns, the size of a small bedroom. Size was not a limit for me.
Whale Dreaming has the same colours as the Mermaids' Tango; Rich Dark Caramel brown and contrasting light gold created with melted glass over the glaze.
I've added ropes and vines that were washed up on the beach. These have been woven through the holes and rise up through the whale.

The moss green is varied in depth creating the speckles. Melted glass over the green glaze has created the liquid Lapis Blue crystals.

I know it's a long title, but the texture and the colour inspired me to poetry.
This sculpture was glazed upside down. The unglazed foot creates a contrast of textures and colour. The interior is dark mat brown. The exterior has so many colours of deep green and vivid blue moving in fluid ripples around the form.
I like it best lying on it's side with the mouth lifted up. But it can also be stood up on the mouth.

Mermaids' Tango

The swollen bases come together at the top to create a fluid line.

Mermaids' Tango is made of two separate sculptures that fit against each other perfectly. Between the two pieces are negative spaces resembling bubbles, rising up through water. The bubbles have been created by the turbulence of the tango.
Wrapped around each piece are some woody vines that I found washed up on the beach.

Nudi Branch Condo

This ocean habitat is a fantasy sculpture. Micro nudi Branches might take up residence in this aquatic condo.
I created a thick textured surface and glazed these in a glossy caramel oxide glaze. The tops of each tube were dipped in a cobalt slip before firing. The whole sculpture has a reference to historical pottery, in the rounded vessel shape. However this piece has no functional attributes, other than sculptural.

Flotsam and Jetsam

This piece was created after a walk on along Mai Khao beach, Phuket, when I found the cut-up piece of plastic from a fuel container. The 'found' piece is in the top right corner, stuck onto the canvas with super glue.
Size: 60x80cm. for each canvas. Framed separately.
Medium: Acrylic paint, super glue and found beach trash.

I wanted to evoke an 'other-worldly' feel, as I think the ocean is another world. It was the ocean that inspired this piece, starting with the trash I collected.
I also wanted to play with cubism. I hoped the angles would also represent a school of swimming fish. The two colours are a contrast of sand deep sea, light and dark. The shapes are a contrast on organic and man-made objects and their harmonious blend.

Laurie-Sea flowers

While scuba diving with Laurie as a buddy in the Thai Gulf, She pointed out a beautiful purple anemone in the process of closing. She mimed that I could sculpt it from clay. So I have.
One of the flowers is blue on the outside and mostly yellow on the interior. The other is green on the outside and mostly pink on the inside. I wanted the flowing, fleshy feel of the anemone.

starfish take a walk

Here is a family of four starfish. They all got up and went for an assertive, happy walk.
They can be grouped in any number of stories, or placed inside each other. They make a beautiful sound when struck due to their bell-shape. The colours are gold and copper, rich earth brown and black.

Coral colony

Sorry about the colour here, but this colony of coral is a really vivid cobolt blue that shimmers as though under water. There are a few black sea-worms crawling in and out of holes, making their homes. Some of the baubles are suspended over others and there are lots of spaces in the middle. So althogh actually heavy and large, the impression is of a weightless-ness, nest of coral.

Sea Bouys

These guys are not finished yet. But they are the first to come out of the Phuket studio.
They're not finished, because I want to find some ropes washed up on the beach and weave the coloured ropes through these blue spheres.
They look all loose, but the glaze has stuck them together into one sculpture. All together, there's 13 spheres.

Seahorses Dancing is how I have named these two paintings. The lines remind of the movement of seahorses as they cling to cubist coral. They are painted with tempura colours on paper.
Sorry about my reflection. If your eyes can photoshop edit for your brain, you'll have more luck than I did with the programme. But you get a pretty clear idea of what I've created.

sea slug mating season

These are a pair of warty slugs. Their construction was very difficult as the shrinking clay was pulling in so many directions. But there is none of this tension evident in the slow sensual wrapping of one slug as he spoons his mate. They support each other in this posture.

Japanese sewer plate rubbing

Imagine the scene; We're walking at night through the streets of Ginza (? or Kyoto, or Tokyo. I can't remember. Just imagine a quaint small lane somewhere in a busy Japanese city). We have eaten dinner and it is just about to rain, but the streets are still dry. Down this small lane we walk. There is no room for a footpath, just the narrow road squeezed between small shopfronts and restaurants. For the whole trip I had been noticing the beautiful iron plates that cover the stormwater drains. Now I was armed with the necessary materials. I had Noi and Aey protect me from cars aand pedestrians as I whipped out my large white paper and chalks and started rubbing. I had a few appreciative onlookers. And the result is worth the effort. It now hangs framed in a bedroom at The Black Pearl.

Pod Bubbles

I couldn't decide if these looked like seed-pods or bubbles of air in the

water, but I love them. More holes than you can poke a finger at - or into. Altogether there are 12 spheres, all interconnected, but only four of them touch the ground. The rest are left to float upwards - or tumble down, depending on how you look at it.

Spike!

Spike is great. He's about45cm long. You can see his resemblance to Gordon the Sea slug (from two posts earlier). But Spike is just that little bit more edgy than Gordon. I wanted to contrast his colours with that of Gordon, so Spike went for the pale green interior, speckled with black dots. His exterior skin, beautifully textured, is highlighted by the red-brown transparent glaze. The spikes are quite sharp and fragile but easily support his weight.

I love creating these sculptures that have no obvious glaze-free footing. It's challenging of thinking how to apply glazes.

The Woman Bowl

Gordon the sea slug

He's also a beautiful colour. But I say that about all of my ceramic works.

He is versatile, too. one way he's a sculpture. Upside-down he's a funky sushi dish.

Crystal Shards

This sculpture looks jagged, like teeth protecting the mouth of cave. But its small size ( 30 x 30 x 30cm) makes it less sinister. Made from hard porcelain slabs, carefully pieced together like a 3d jigsaw, it comes across as something untouchable and delicate. I'd love to see it on a black lacquer antique cabinet. Crystal shards are somehow beautiful to look at and need our care when touching.

Buoys Will Be Boys

It took years to collect

all of these small floats (buoys), that washed up onto our beach; The Plantation, in Chumporn. The floats were once tied to the top of fishing nets. These ones have come loose and found their way here. I have brought them together in a mixture of random weaving, silicone and glue to create this boy-like (some of the buoys are very phallic) sculpture. Like boys, this fellow is grubby and messy. He's made of rubbish that has washed up on the beach. He's complicated, complex and intricate (the main body of the work) and he is also pure, innocent and simple (the major buoy/head). He was just finished this weekend. He was 9 days in the making. He is 70cm tall and 45cm at his widest girth. He is made from recycled materials. He wants us to recycle more and more.

A STARfish and a Sea Sponge

These two sculptures were in the STARs exhibition.

Starfish is a small miracle; another of my "dangerous" pieces that survived the kiln.

Sea Sponge is just a delight for the senses. The exterior colours are earthy and warm, the interior is fleshy-pink and cool. The whole surface is glassy smooth and rippled like a piece of sheer silk frozen in the act of it's flutter. The mouth is unglazed so it was fired upside - down. This way I got the sexy glaze all over the roounded bottom.

Ripple Walls

I love these ripples. They are chunky and curly and substantially big. This is Stoneware clay with a golden red oxide glaze. The two walls together measure aprox 60cm long and 40 cm high.

Pod Family

Ginger Jars

MORE functional objects!!!!! It can't be helped. My Ginger Jars are beautiful. I enjoy designing a bowl and matching fitted lid. I enjoy perfecting the skill. I am beginning to see the beauty in functional objects. Each jar is aprox 20cm high. Tho I must confess they have not been raised to art status. Is this the difference between a craft and an art?

Clam Bowls

Function and form? Yes I've done it again. It's not the best thing to do but I was practicing on the wheel and the really wide soft edge of a large bowl, brought up too quickly had this beautiful wavy effect when it flopped down.

This made trimming difficult so I did what I could to get a neat foot and then hand carved the exterior in this clam shell finish. I've already said that function should not be a factor in my sculpture but I can't resist putting seafood into this bowl.

Atlantis Labyrinth

Atlantis Labyrinth is a ceramic sculpture of a sponge colony

The Colours in this sponge colony are so luminous. The light catches Kasumi's Clear glaze on her red-brown beautifully reflecting deep blues. Inside is a fleshy pink.

This sculpture, like my Octopus Bowl, invites a caress. The colours and glassy finish are so fluid and silky it just wants to be held. And like Octopus Bowl, this is also a bit bulky to lovingly fondle. These sponges are over 40cm tall. It is not a fragile sculpture. It sits very comfortably.

The base is wheel thrown and the tubes are coiled. I enjoy creating negative spaces in a sculpture. The two tallest tubes separate and then join at the top, creating an outside space within the sculpture. Maybe some inspiration from Henry Moor?

Golden Octopus from the Deep

I painted this guy with acrylics on four canvas panels.

size: 60 x 160cm

I did it while I was at The Black Pearl for a week in August. Noi had gone to Bangkok for work and I was on my own. The time went by quickly. But I wanted this guy done.

The workers building Baan Mahasajahn were totally intrigued. I painted the water first. Lots of water with big wet brushes on a wet canvas. While it was still wet I painted the Golden Octopus. I had seen one just like this colour while snorkelling aroung coral in Candellight Bay. His patterned golden skin struck me with his beauty. It's now years later that I am able to capture it.

After I thought it was done, I phoned Noi in Bkk and told him about what i had doone. It had taken three days. He asked "Is it cute or scary?" It was the perfect critical question. I had the wrong answer. Even the workers kids thought it was cute. So I attaked it again. More black, lots darker, and splattered the whole thing with black then hosed it off and let the colours dribble down and run together. then asked a little girl, about four years old, if she still liked it. She didn't answer, just backed away behind her mums protective legs. I was happy with her responce. My painting was finished.

Giant Jellyfish

I really enjoyed doing these guys. They are giants.

Each panel is 1m x 2.4m

When we were in Osaka, Noi and I went to the aquarium. I took dozens of photos of these jellies floating around in their tank. I love their fluidity.

They are now mounted in the stairwell of The Black Pearl.

And there's a great history to the pieces:

While Baan Mahasajahn was being built, the workers used reclaimed billboard panels to construct their shanty bungalows. These panels still had the paint from the billboards on them. They were nailed over poles to create a very protective shelter from the Ocean's elements. The builders lived in their huts for over a year. When Baan Mahasajahn was complete enough, they moved in there and knocked down their huts.

I had always loved the colours on these panels, but as Noi complains that I'm always picking up rubbish from the beach to make into art that nobody would want in their homes, i was afraid to ask him if I could have these panels. I knew he'd think I was crazy. They are rusting pieces of junk.

But as the junk was being cleared away I saw my art slipping away. I had to have them, so I knew I needed Noi involved. I grabbed him and a pot of paint that was being used to paint the ceilings. There was already a manky, crusty broad brush in the paint pot. It had been there for days.

So at night, I dragged the panels into a clear space and together we splattered the jellyfish tentacles. It was fun. I had the bodies done in no-time. It was all over too soon. But they were finished. Once framed and hung on the 6m wall, they look fabulous.

Turtle Shell / Egg

I like this shape, I like these colours and I like the hole in the top.

The shape and colour are turtle-shell-ish. Imagine the turtle, all tucked up in side. I have some turtles in a pond at home. When I pick them up, they are about this size and this shape. My turtles are a totally different colour to this piece, but I like the mottled green effect. The glaze is my recipe. I love it.

The hole in the top just makes me want to put my finger in it. It would be an exciting intrusion. Doesn't it look like it could snap; just like a turtle? And Like the fragile sea turtles, this egg is cracked. Messages are loaded, here.

Barnacle cluster

I love this cute little cluster of barnacles. They have a dumpy, clumpy, chunky feel. They hang out together on weekends and know all the same friends. Barnacles are great people to know.

These guys are still available at 100Tonson Gallery, Bangkok. Or just ask me. Each singular piece fits into a large hand. But they could never be separated.

Brain Coral

This is where I have been challenged. This brain coral was my fourth attempt at creating this subject.

Eventually I settled on a pinch pot with added coils on the outside. It is a beautiful marriage of form and function. But here is a bowl that needs not be used. Like a brain, it's already full of potential.

I still want to try it again because it's not pushing the limits enough. This worked because it was safe. However, I do like it because it is essentially a basic pinch pot.

I love the colours inside. Again, Kasumi provides the best glazes in Bangkok.

Curtain Coral

I think this is the piece that caught the attention of a few people. Enough attention to prompt getting me invited to join the STARs exhibition.

It was made from slabbing porcelain clay. I was inspired to create this piece after taking so many photos of the coral around the Similan Islands, off the coast of Phuket.

This item sold for THB 25,000

I was proud to see it sold.

I shouldn't need my work to be sold to get a sense of my worth as an artist. It should be enough to create art for the sake of creating. And it is. I love the process. However, when things do sell, there is also pride and pleasure that other people value what I do.

Octopus Bowl

This was one of my first large pieces. Once I had done this, there was no going back to mediocracy.

The Ocopus bowl was inspired after a trip to Japan. In Tokyo's fresh seafood market they displayed octopus in a very unusual way. But the design of an octopus, almost turned inside-out, was beautiful. And so the octopus bowl was born.

I began with a pinch pot and then coiled the arms on. It was a long and difficult process. I am actually surprised it survived the building and firing. It is still my favourite.
It was the first to be sold at STARs.

Was I sad to see him go? Yes. But it is also a wonderful feeling to know that someone else sees what I see and values it. He sold for THB 25,000. That also made me happy.

Mojito Jug

For our Merry Mexico Christmas large quantities of mojito cocktails were necessary. So I made this jug especially for the occasion and then gifted it to Gretchen.

Then Peta and Steve put in a request for one and so did Molly and Ret.

I'm not usually into functional ceramics, but I like these funky jugs.

The Gretchen jug was thrown on a wheel and had extra bits added on after. The glaze is one of my favourites from Kasumi.

This exhibition was an honour and a rewarding experience.

The sculptures pictured here are Curtain Coral, Octopus Bowl, Starfish and Jellyfish.

I was in such grand company, represented at Bangkok's finest private gallery. Now listed among the WORLD'S top 50 emerging galleries. It was more than a foot in the art world door, it was a centre-stage performance.
