This was my first spirit house. It was commissioned by Rusty L. As Noi had designed and built and decorated his country house in the Moroccan style, it was appropriate that he had a Moroccan style Spirit House.
A Spirit House is believed by Thais to attract the spirits that would otherwise take up residence in your own home. The Spirit House should be attractive to the spirits and also well maintained.
This house has a wheel turned dome but is otherwise slab built. The spires are delicate but other than that, this spirit house should last centuries.
I really enjoyed the challenge of building this but love the idea of combining the two cultures like this. More combinations planned.

A Thai Spirit House.

This was done especially for my friend and collector Gretchen, who loves dogs as much as I do.
Gretchen had an old Thai wooden spirit house that nobody would repair. So I made her a new one that would last for centuries.

It was especially difficult to glaze, given it's size. But I'm very happy with the result. The rich red brown colour had multiple dippings and I had to dust off the footprints to highlight them.

Two abalone guys dress up in tuxedo and pretend to be vases

The annual KIS International School Charity Art competition is scheduled for April 27th, 2012. the theme is TOGETHER. I've created these simple, elegant cylindrical forms with a ripple down their sides. When placed together, they form an interesting negative space between them.
Their fleshy ripples are full of movement and fluidity. Their white collars also invite a caress along their silken contours.
The jackets' glaze is an oil-spot Temmoku, highlighted with a pearly clear glaze that breaks up on different surfaces. The jacket shares a likeness with an abalone shell and the ripples are the flesh feeling its way out of the shell. The shirt glaze is a flat white, like clean fresh-cooked seafood.. Can you tell I'm hungry as I write this?

Rice Jar

We eat a lot of rice.
The rice jar is always on the kitchen counter. It should be beautiful. It should feel good when you touch it. It's about 25cm H x 25cm square

Bowls for baking

I love baking and wanted my own bowls. Imaging baking delicious food in beautiful bowls that you made yourself and they feel good to hold! These are hand built, not wheel thrown. So they dont feel 'perfect'. I'm aware of holding something hand-made and it makes me feel good to hold it. Put that sort of energy into your baking!

Planter pot

We always have bunches of orchids in the house. They last much longer than cut flowers and are pretty cheap and readily available, here. I made this bowl especially to show off the orchids

Octojar

This jar is a little scary, a little attractive at the same time.
The colours are dizzying.
The size a little daunting.
The tentacles a little creepy.
Yet I still like it.

It's about 30cm high, wide and long.

Garden Snail Tea Pot

Height = 33cm
width = 23cm
length = 33cm
Glazed porcelain

Although the spout of my giant blue garden snail, could pour if it wanted to, this guy was designed to be a garden sculpture. He has holes in the base to allow rainwater to escape. I plan to cement him onto the garden wall.
Look at that glaze on his neck! Here's a snail with style.

Funky Fungi bowls

These dessert bowls were designed from the fungi seen growing in deep forests.

The sculptural hand-built shape means they're just as useful for decorating as they are for eating out of. "Let me just grab some art to eat out of"

The mat glaze deepens into a deep green glass at the bottom of the bowl. There's actually so many subtle colors coming out through the light.

Another Ginger Jar

There's something about a lidded pot, that a potter loves. They're irresistible to make. This jar was thrown on the wheel and hand trimmed with a slight fluted finish. The oil-spot glaze worked really well to bring out the subtle irregularities that come from hand trimming.
This is my favorite glaze.
